A Night Outside
Because I didn't sleep the previous night (2010-08-07), I went to bed early after a busy day, already expecting to have some kind of extraordinary experience. As I wrote
here, skipping a night's sleep can be very helpful when inducing
lucid dreams. My expectations were not only fulfilled, but greatly exceeded.
I wake up in the middle of the night after several hours of sleep... or rather my mind does. My body seems to be still asleep or at least deeply relaxed and though I can remotely feel it, my focus predominantly lasts on a second body, overlapping with the prior. A vibratory energetic sensation of medium strength permeates the double, a casual precursor of an out-of-body experience I became used to, so I just wait and let it happen. I feel the second body slowly turn counterclockwise and think about trying to separate, but decide it is still too early. There is something else I notice, something odd about the
physical world, to which I am still partially connected through the resting body: It seems hollow, insubstantial, fake. To my disappointment, the vibrations subside and my focus shifts back to the
physical body. The upcoming experience is about to end prematurely and I can just accept it, but I'm not frustrated, because I know that I can easily reinduce the state from here. My bladder is full, so I go to the bathroom, then I return to bed. What follows, is a series of out-of-body experiences. I can't recall all of it, but I'll try to depict as much as possible.

Episode I, A Brief Flight I get up from my bed and perform a reality check. "Alright, I'm out.", I think. Not bothering to take the stairs, I jump down the 2.5 meters from my sleeping gallery, but though I sink down, I do not reach the floor, hovering above instead. The room is dark, all blinds are down. It only takes a decision to float towards one of the balcony doors, pass through the wood of the Venetian blind and the window glass behind. Once outside, I feel the cool night air, but as quickly as the experience started, it already ends. Maybe I should have invested a bit of time to stabilize the state first. Episode II, Void I get up again, perform another reality check and jump down, this time landing softly on the floor. Having no vision - only blackness, I struggle with the problem, eventually resulting in termination of the experience.

Episode III, "Why should we die?"Getting up,
reality check, jumping down... so far, so good. It is dark, but I have vision, so I check the room for discrepancies. After crossing the room, I turn around and perceive two entities appearing as tall middle-aged men. They wear unremarkable clothes (jeans and pullover) and their faces resemble movie actors that I recognize, albeit I can't recall them. One is wearing glasses. I approach them and the one in the red pullover asks me: "Why should we die?" It rather sounds like a philosophical question than a personal one. I am a bit perplexed by the unexpected introduction. Because I can't think of anything better (or because it has become a habit) I ask for his name, pointing at him, but in response he merely repeats the question. In hope for a better understanding, I turn towards the other man. "Does
the system exist?", he asks me. "It does and it does not.", I reply, "Both applies at the same time." His features lighten up. It seems I had given the answer he wished to hear. I add: "But that makes it contradictive to react towards it." Behind the men I see the opened closet, which accounts for the space below the sleeping gallery I mentioned above. The light is on and a strange contraption has been placed inside... a circular saw attached to a guide rail in a white painted metal frame. The men lead me towards it and though I sense danger, I am willing to let them proceed. There is not much - if anything, that could still frighten me in my current state of being. Now I also recognize a bare metal table below the saw. Obviously they want to cut something in half and since there is nothing else, I reason this something is me. Receiving visions of dissection I involuntarily awake.
Episode IV, Scaring The Living DaylightsOnce again: Getting up,
checking... This time I leave through the entrance door into the corridor. As often, it has taken a different layout, so I try to orient myself looking for resemblances. Moving towards the exit of the building, I stop in front of a door leading to a neighbour's dwelling. I decide to go inside and pass through the solid wooden door. Although the composition of things is different, I recognize the fully lit place, to which I've been many times before new neighbours moved in. The most obvious change is the absence of a huge garderobe that parted the room. It's not an unlikely change though. Sometimes I am surprised by congruences I didn't know about when reexamining places I visited out-of-body, but most of the time, resemblance is rather marginal. The spot where the garderobe used to be now holds a double bed instead. A woman is lying on it, covered by a voluminous duvet, which seems a bit unusual considering the current temperature. From the bathroom, I hear water splashing and taking a peek, I see the back of a man taking a shower. Uncomfortable with my intrusion I am about to head back to the corridor, when suddenly the woman seems to descry me, just when I pass by her head. Her face reflects utter fright and - like a reflex, I react by taking on the form of a ghastly black shadow, scaring her even more. Suddenly she is quiet, her eyes staring blankly at the ceiling, containing no more gleam of consciousness. "Oh boy!", I think as I reach the dark corridor, "She really will have something to tell tomorrow.", wondering at the same time if there might be any shared recollection of the instant.
Episode V, InvitationGetting up,
checking and again entering the altered corridor... This time I decide to visit a neighbour that I know, but whose dwelling I haven't been to yet. After managing to turn on the light and skipping a few straying extra doors, I make it to the right one and enter a dark and not very large room. Opposite the entrace, I find my neighbour sitting awake on her bed, dressed in her jammies. She doesn't seem surprised at all and invites me over. We have a conversation, but I have no recollection of it.
This is most of what I can recall from this night. There were other episodes from which only glimpses of impressions remain, for example I have a colorful and vivid memory of marvelling at the clarity of perception, that does not only allow me to look
at things, but
into things. Later I have long and coherent dreams, ranging from vivid over prelucid to
lucid ones, but I restrict myself to describing the
OBEs in this article. When I finally got up -
doing yet another reality check, just to be careful, I felt very well, calm and content.
